A YOUNG man described as courageous and inspirational in his fight against leukaemia, has died. Martyn White, 32, of Quorn, died from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at Leicester Royal Infirmary on Wednesday May 7. His brother Michael, 27, who is from Loughborough, recently raised £2,150 after completing Martyn’s dream of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Martyn had pledged to climb the mountain on New Year’s Eve 2005 by the time he was 35 but was diagnosed with the rare form of leukaemia in July 2006. He received a bone marrow transplant three months later from another brother, Chris. Martyn then lost the use of his left arm following a series of strokes and although he returned to work as a selfemployed-graphic designer, realised he would be unable to climb the 19,364ft mountain. However Michael, who currentlylives in Sydney, decided to complete his brother’s ambition and reached Kilimanjaro's summit in January. Martyn’s mother Yvonne, said: “Martyn was a passionate and enthusiastic individual. “He was incredibly close to his brothers - one was a donor for him and the other completed his lifetime ambition for him. “He was a lovely person and we will miss him very much.” A letter to Yvonne, the matron at Leicester Royal Infirmary where Martyn was a patient, described him as a “truly inspirational person, and a brave, courageous and positive individual.” Michael is donating the funds raised from his climb to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary. |
